Course Details
How do children acquire language? Why do we use slang? What are the differences in English usage between genders, occupations or around the world? If you are curious about both written and spoken English, and have a passion for creative writing, then English Language is the subject for you.
The course follows the AQA specification and consists of two examinations worth 80% of the A-level and two NEA coursework tasks worth 20%. For paper 1: Students study how language creates meanings and representations across a range of texts, and study how children learn to speak. For paper 2, students explore how language diversity and change, and language discourses. The NEA coursework tasks include an original creative writing piecce with commentary, and a language investigation on a topic selected and researched the student.
Lessons consist of a mixture of teacher-led delivery, discussion, pair and group tasks/projects and independent learning. Technology is used to facilitate research on specific topics.
Students will need some basic equipment such as pens, highlighters, lined paper, a folder to store notes.
Students can progress to a range of university or apprenticeship courses with the transferable knowledge and skills the subject provides. English Language students can go on to confidently pursue many career paths such as journalism, publishing, media, teaching and law.
You will need a minimum or five GCSEs, including English at grade 5 and Maths at grade 4 together with three other subjects at grade 4 or above.
Additional entry requirements:
- A minimum grade 5 in Language and grade 4 in Literature
- A love of reading and writing is also expected

Yes. During the interview process you will be introduced to a member of our Learner Support Team if necessary. We will take initial details of access arragements. This can be discussed again at enrolment, with follow up appointments with the team during the first few weeks of term.
Yes. You will have timetabled sessions each day of the week. There will be times when you are not in a lesson; this is your personal study time. During these sessions you will be completing activities which mean you are prepared for your subject lessons. This includes completing homework, revision, Brainscape decks, coursework tasks etc.
