Course Details

Curious about what drives criminal behaviour and how society responds to crime? Criminology offers a captivating exploration into the causes of crime, the criminal justice system, and the impact of crime on communities. Perfect for those who are passionate about making a difference.

In WJEC Criminology, we cover four comprehensive units: Changing Awareness of Crime, Criminological Theories, Crime Scene to Courtroom, and Crime and Punishment. Each unit includes specific Assessment Criteria (ACs) that guide our learning. For instance, in Unit 1, we develop campaigns to raise awareness about underreported crimes (AC1.1). Unit 2 involves studying various criminological theories and applying them to real-life scenarios (AC2.1). In Unit 3, we analyse crime scenes and follow the process from investigation to courtroom (AC3.1). Finally, Unit 4 examines the effectiveness of different punishments and the justice system's role (AC4.1). This structured approach ensures a thorough understanding of criminology.

The WJEC Criminology course for Years 12 and 13 provides students with a comprehensive understanding of criminal behaviour, the justice system, and societal impacts. It combines theoretical knowledge with practical application, covering topics such as criminological theories, crime scene analysis, and the role of the media in crime. Students find the course engaging and relevant to real-world issues.

Outside of class, Criminology includes enriching trips to places like Shrewsbury Prison, Krakow in Poland, and the Crown Courts in Liverpool. These experiences provide valuable insights into the criminal justice system, historical contexts, and real-world applications of our studies.

Students need a notebook, pens, highlighters, and access to a computer or tablet for research and assignments.

Studying WJEC Criminology opens doors to various progression routes, including higher education in criminology, law, sociology, and psychology. It also prepares students for careers in law enforcement, forensic science, social work, and the legal profession. The course provides a strong foundation for further academic and professional pursuits, equipping students with critical thinking and analytical skills essential for these fields.

You will need a minimum or five GCSEs, including English at grade 5 and Maths at grade 4 together with three other subjects at grade 4 or above.

The College will always treat each applicant as an individual. Should you not have or not expect to obtain the grades stated above, or not have relevant industry-related experience, the College would still welcome your application for this course as this will enable us to identify whether this course is, in fact, the right course for you or whether another course may be more appropriate.
