Course Details
"There is no such thing as society!" This controversial quotation is from Britain's first female Prime Minister; but do you agree? Sociology explores how crime, religion, education and families shape and mould individuals and society, but also how they can also be used to marginalise and exploit us!
Sociology offers a fascinating insight into social and cultural issues. It combines theoretical perspectives and research evidence to explain how societies work and the reasons for inequalities in society. Sociology provides an understanding of the power of society in shaping who we are. It also offers a perspective into the various ways theorists perceive society and how this changes the perception of what society should become.
Lessons are centered around topics which include families and households, research methods and sociological theories, belief systems and crime and deviance. Starting with education, the students will be asked to discuss their own experiences and how they fit into the various different ways in which we can consider the ways in which these societal institutions have evolved and developed, the extent to which they encourage or challenge inequality and how they work with other societal institutions.
Our location is ideal in supporting Higher Education visits as we have several on our doorstep and therefore can arrange subject taster days at various universities. In addition to this are able to offer trips that support and enhance the course content including visits to prisons and also different religious buildings. There are occasions where students may also attend exam skills seminars.
Students need a notebook, pens, highlighters, and access to a computer or tablet for research and assignments.

The College will always treat each applicant as an individual. Should you not have or not expect to obtain the grades stated above, or not have relevant industry-related experience, the College would still welcome your application for this course as this will enable us to identify whether this course is, in fact, the right course for you or whether another course may be more appropriate.
