Course Details
Do you enjoy the challenge of tackling complex puzzles? Do you wish to pursue a STEM career? Then, look no further, and join us on this fascinating journey through numbers, algorithms, graphs, and formulae, which translate the language of nature and underpin our continuous, technological advancement.
In A-level Mathematics, you will study a range of topics from Pure Maths including Proof, Algebra, Functions, Coordinate Geometry, Sequences and Series, Trigonometry, Exponentials and Logarithms, Differentiation, Integration and Vectors. In addition, one third of the course consists of a combination of Statistics and Mechanics.
Lessons consist of a mixture of teacher-led delivery, problem solving activities, exam practice, paired and group work and graphical demonstrations. Pupils are encouraged to study and learn independently using materials on our Teams platform and wider college resources.
Our department offers many opportunities to learn and develop outside of the classroom. We run the UKMT Challenge annually, arrange workshops, live chats with mathematical professionals and run trips to lectures and universities. We also support our pupils with intervention groups running weekly.
Basic stationery: files for lecture notes, lined paper, pens, pencils, ruler. Also essential is the Casio fx-991CW calculator.
A-level Maths is a facilitating subject which means that it is one of the most useful for entry to a wide range of university degree courses. It is essential for students wishing to study Physics, Engineering and Chemistry, and, of course, Maths at degree level.
You will need a minimum or five GCSEs, including English at grade 5 and Maths at grade 4 together with three other subjects at grade 4 or above.
Additional entry requirements:
- A minimum of a grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics
The College will always treat each applicant as an individual. Should you not have or not expect to obtain the grades stated above, or not have relevant industry-related experience, the College would still welcome your application for this course as this will enable us to identify whether this course is, in fact, the right course for you or whether another course may be more appropriate.
University Guarantee
Every Sefton Sixth Form College student who successfully achieves a Level 3 qualification and meets attendance and entry requirements, is guaranteed a place on a course at the Hugh Baird University Centre.
